The Magnificent Street of the Knights: A Journey Through History in Rhodes

Nestled within the medieval charm of Rhodes Town lies a historic gem that captures the imagination of all who wander its cobblestone paths – the illustrious Street of the Knights. Stepping onto this ancient thoroughfare is akin to stepping back in time, as each stone bears witness to centuries of rich history and noble heritage.

Originally constructed in the 14th century during the reign of the Knights Hospitaller, the Street of the Knights served as the epicenter of power and prestige for the Order of St. John. Lined with imposing medieval buildings, each adorned with the heraldic emblems of the knightly orders, the street exudes an aura of grandeur and nobility.

Walking along the Street of the Knights is a journey through the annals of history, with every archway, courtyard, and façade offering a glimpse into the past. From the imposing Palace of the Grand Master, with its formidable defenses and intricate mosaics, to the intimate Inns of the Tongues, where knights from different regions of Europe once gathered, each structure tells a story of valor, chivalry, and honor.

But it is not only the architecture that captivates the senses on this storied street – it is the palpable sense of heritage that permeates the air. As visitors stroll beneath the vaulted passageways and towering ramparts, they can almost hear the echoes of knights in full regalia, their armor clanking as they make their rounds.

Today, the Street of the Knights stands as a testament to Rhodes’ enduring legacy as a crossroads of civilizations. Visitors from around the world come to marvel at its timeless beauty and immerse themselves in its rich tapestry of culture and history. Whether exploring the meticulously preserved chambers of the Palace of the Grand Master or simply pausing to admire the intricate stonework of the buildings, a journey down the Street of the Knights is an experience not soon forgotten.

As the sun sets over the medieval skyline of Rhodes Town, casting a golden hue upon the ancient stones, one can’t help but feel a sense of reverence for the knights and nobles who once walked these hallowed grounds. For in the heart of the Street of the Knights, the spirit of chivalry lives on, inviting all who pass through its gates to embark on their own noble quest through time.

The Stone Giants of the Aegean

This remarkable windmill, situated on the picturesque shores of Rhodes Island, has been an enduring part of the island’s history and our family’s legacy. Operated by our family for generations, the windmill was instrumental in providing fresh bread for the people of Rhodes. It served not only as a practical facility but also as a community cornerstone, where the rhythm of daily life often revolved around its sails.

The windmill is a classic example of traditional craftsmanship. Built in the cylindrical stone style, it features a rotating conical roof designed to follow the direction of the wind, adorned with a distinctive straw “hat.” Its operation relied on white triangular sails affixed to large wooden antennas, which harnessed the wind’s power to drive an intricate system of axes and wheels. These mechanisms turned the upper millstone over a stationary lower one to grind grains such as wheat, barley, and corn into fine flour.

With favorable winds, the windmill could work tirelessly, sometimes operating 24 hours a day to meet seasonal demands or weather conditions. It had the capacity to grind 20-70 kilograms of wheat per hour, a vital contribution to the sustenance of the island’s population.

The windmill was a bustling center of activity. Villagers would bring their crops to be milled, often carrying heavy sacks of grain on foot or by donkey. Women also played a significant role, taking part in the demanding task of transporting grain to and from the mill. As compensation for the service, the mill man would retain 10% of the milled product.

Operating a windmill required more than technical skill—it demanded a keen understanding of nature. The mill men were highly respected for their ability to interpret weather patterns, assess wind strength, and skillfully manage the sails to optimize efficiency. These traits likened them to captains of the sea, navigating the forces of nature with expertise.

Today, this windmill stands as a cherished historical monument, offering a glimpse into Rhodes Island’s rich agricultural heritage and the ingenuity of those who once worked tirelessly within its walls.
